What is Qualifying Work Experience (QWE)?

All candidates looking to qualify as a solicitor in England and Wales through the SQE route must complete two years' full-time (or equivalent) qualifying work experience. QWE provides aspiring solicitors with practical experience of legal work and the opportunity to develop the competencies needed to be a solicitor. QWE can be gained before, during, or after sitting the SQE assessments, and can be accumulated across up to four different organisations.

QWE Requirements

  • Must involve providing real legal services (not simulated)
  • Minimum exposure to two competencies from the Statement of Solicitor Competence
  • Two years full-time or equivalent duration
  • Can be gained in paid or voluntary work
  • Can be accumulated across up to four organisations
  • Can be gained in England/Wales or overseas
  • Must be confirmed by a solicitor of England and Wales or Compliance Officer for Legal Practice (COLP)

What Counts as QWE?

QWE must involve providing legal services as defined in the Legal Services Act 2007. Examples include:

  • Work placements during a law degree
  • Working in a law clinic
